Job Summary:

Reports directly to the Revenue Cycle Manager and will assist to the develop, plan, organize and implement current and future strategies to bill customers, process payments, minimize bad debt, improve cash flow and manage the overall health of the companys receivables. Will assist with the day-to-day activities of the Revenue Cycle team which include but are not limited to billing, collections, accounts receivables and financial planning for patients. This position will work with the Revenue Cycle team to meet department long and short term strategic goals. Work is performed under minimal supervision and in accordance with established procedures. The Revenue Cycle Specialist position requires the use of computers and other office equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Strong customer service skills
    1. Answering client calls
    2. Prompt return and follow up to all interactions
    3. Prompt response to requests for information, both internally and externally
  2. Assist patients with questions regarding outstanding balances.
    1. Ensure proper CPT and IDC-10 codes were used.
    2. Review to ensure insurances were billed properly.
    3. Ensure slides were applied properly.
    4. Collect remaining outstanding patient owed balances.
  3. Process medical and behavioral health payments made directly to Health West
    1. Process paper insurance checks to Athena
    2. Process credit card payments from insurance companies and patients
      1. Running the credit card payment through the Athena linked credit card terminal
      2. Uploads transaction to Athena
  4. Work Athena task list
  5. Work Athena hold buckets as assigned by supervisor.
  6. Work the Athena unapplied credits
    1. Insurance
      1. Refund insurance companies as appropriate
    2. Patient
      1. Refund patients as appropriate
  7. Works with outside collections vendor to provide requested statements and information.
  8. Works with all workers compensation insurance company inquiries for additional billing record information.
  9. Slide application audits.
  10. Working accounts receivable to collect past due payments.
    1. Develop and sustain a good working relationship with insurance companies;
    2. identify possible problems that may cause any slowing of the cash flow. (i.e. new insurance plans, new network providers, reference services, or new providers).
  11. Assist front desk and central scheduling staff
    1. Patient questions
    2. Determining correct insurance package for patients
    3. Slide questions
      1. Slide correctly
      2. Income documentation
  12. Work assigned tasks in Athena


SECONDARY:
  1. Back-up staff when needed.
  2. To attend company meetings as assigned.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical journals and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

QUALITY IMPROVEMENT: Applies quality improvement methods techniques; assists in data collection; Identifies processes for improvements in daily work and educates new employees in team process.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT: Enters or records data timely and accurately; promotes confidentiality of information; logs onto the system using own password; logs off the system when leaving the work station; reports suspected violation of security/confidentiality issues; reviews data and identifies trends.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: Attends in-service and education programs as determined by Health West Administration; attends continuing education required for maintenance of professional certification or licensure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of, but not limited to, those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Position requires occasional lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted; requires frequent sitting and repetitive hand movements, occasional standing, walking, squatting, bending, and reaching, with some lifting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  2. Prefer at least three years experience in medical billing, accounts receivables, and patient customer service.
  3. Proven ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff, insurance companies and patients.
  4. Competency in computerized patient billing systems and appropriate computer software.
  5. Prefer demonstrated knowledge, usage, and experience with CPT and ICD10 codes.
  6. Strong ethics and a high level of personal and professional integrity.
  7. Proven record of change management skills
  8. Ability to organize and prioritize work and manage multiple priorities.
  9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including, letters, memos and emails.
  10. Excellent attention to detail and high degree of accuracy.
  11. Ability to research and analyze data.
  12. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  13. Exhibit a high degree of confidentiality in all aspects of the position.

  2. Prefer at least three years' experience in medical billing, accounts receivables, and patient customer service.

  5. Prefer demonstrated knowledge, usage, and experience with CPT and ICD10 codes.
